The villa where we would take refuge had no fortress for protection; it was a resort and not prepared for a siege.
The king and the baby were housed in the main room. A woman in her sixties welcomed us on the stairs. Those of us who went in first were Cadde, the men who brought the wounded and the king, and those who needed to rest.
“Welcome, dear Cadde,” said the woman with a broad smile and embraced him for a long time.
I did not need to be a fortune teller to know what was going on and why this house existed. It was enough to observe this woman to know that she was one of his lovers. I was surprised that this rumor was true.
