“You serve Tachje?” I said with disdain. “I thought people like you served him in life.” Although I loved her, I couldn’t leave behind my annoyance with the cult. “They are soldiers in his cause.”
“Yes, it is an honor to serve in life and death.” Clarisa’s voice grew louder, as if she wanted to scream but couldn’t quite reach that high of a pitch. “Don’t you miss the moments we shared together? When we were just neighbors who chatted on the balconies of our humble homes. Dreaming big, working in a castle. That’s what we were, dreamers. Some of us flew too close to the sun.”
“I suppose it would have been better to stay there, in those houses.” My eyes met hers. She had that bewitching gaze that could disarm any of my schemes, no matter how hard I tried to maintain them. “If we hadn’t come here, to the castle, maybe we would still be together. You wouldn’t be dead.”
