Chapter 26. Only Mine

The days that followed turned into complete madness, with the death of that cook shaking up all my schemes. Things got rough, especially with the castle kitchen staff, who were mourning his death.
“It’s not important,” Jacob told me when I expressed my concern about his death.
“How can you say that?” I felt like a sting was stuck in me; I didn’t like that he was so cold. It seemed like his heart was a rock at times; it hardened, and empathy froze in his eyes.
“He was a traitor and died as such; I would have executed him anyway,” he responded, with a rough voice, and looked out the window of our room.
Now, everything was ordered and organized. We were about to go to sleep, and I put on my nightgown. I could walk now, although with some difficulty.
“I wasn’t going to kill him; I wanted to talk to him,” I said, hoping he would show me some kindness.
