Chapter 28. Promise

“I’m sorry; the guards have found Katherine’s body.” Clarisa had a somber tone, and I knew my encounter with her had not been kind. This was like an abyss swallowing me, and I couldn’t be experiencing these horrible things. I opened my eyes in shock, paralyzed.
“Are you saying…? When?”
The young woman swallowed and tried to be as tactful as possible.
“A few minutes after you left.” She sometimes forgot that we were friends.
“Oh.” I sobbed, unable to help but be saddened despite never appreciating her much. In a way, I felt directly responsible for her death.
“It’s not your fault,” she said, trying to embrace me, but I didn’t accept her company; I didn’t deserve compassion.
I was the villain I never wanted to be, and at this moment, my fiery heart melted and was lost among the grass, without finding a middle point, dying out. Just imagining the pain of that woman gave me goosebumps, and my stomach was cramped.
