Chapter 27. Something Horrible
DOVE
The day arrived with my verdict, and I had to speak to her before sentencing her. I went down to her cell so I could look her in the eyes when I told her what would happen to her fate; I wouldn’t be so cowardly. I needed to see her before she left; her exile wasn’t death, but it could lead to it.
Jacob said she deserved to die; I couldn’t do it, even if I wanted to. I wasn’t made to kill or to order executions. I walked slowly, almost dragging my feet, fearing the moment when we would see each other again after so much had passed after she had caused me all that suffering.
Lion was with me; he was the only man that my husband trusted blindly. At least he seemed like a good person, although now I wouldn’t put my hands in the fire for anyone. Jacob sometimes made me nervous; his harshness made him very drastic, and that scared me. I didn’t want him to kill anyone else.
“Can I ask you something, Your Majesty?” Lion said when we were halfway there.
