Chapter 34. I Don’t Trust You

My voice weakened in the face of those confessions from my mother-in-law, who was trembling in body and soul. I couldn’t decipher whether what she was telling me was true or just another one of her many traps. She sowed that doubt deep in my heart, taking away the veil I had towards that castle, which I was starting to consider my home.
What had happened to Mirna? Why was she confined to that terrible isolation? The questions were getting stuck, generating even more fear.
“Why, Jacob?” I said, shaking my head and returning to the stairs. The guards had gone; they were all upstairs with the king.
“He’s worse than his brother, Dove…” She couldn’t put her words together, moved by that uncontrollable terror. “He’s done worse things.”
“I don’t believe it,” I said, almost shouting, leaving her behind.
