Chapter 498. On the Edge of Death

I ran with all my strength and nearly fell several times on the stairs. Dresses weren’t comfortable when you had to chase people. I spotted Karl and let out a shout so he would notice me.

He stopped. Something was different about him. Actually, everything was different. His face hadn’t changed, but his eyes… His eyes were dark now and had a different look.

“What happened?” I asked, not understanding anything and my mind was making me imagine terrible things.

He let out a sob. I had never seen him cry. He was always confident and self-assured. Seeing him break down made me feel strange. He sobbed and tears ran down his cheeks uncontrollably.

“Everything is wrong,” he said, lowering his gaze to the ground. “Fabricio is dying. He won’t survive. And I… I have no powers. Plettekman stole them from me. Now I have nothing to help in this war. We will lose.”

It cost him terribly to say this last part, he didn’t want to accept it, he refused what ha
