Chapter 4. The Beginning
Evalina sped off the highway; she had already passed her school dance academy. She had to bite down from tearing up. She knew that if she allowed herself to think about what happened at the house, she wouldn’t be able to do anything other than cry herself sick. Eva refused to break down; she had to get to Elijah’s house, and only then would she allow herself to feel. She felt numb, both with shock and sadness. She had so many questions, but everyone who had answers was gone.
She felt light-headed all of a sudden. Eva remembered she had nothing to eat since the morning of the funeral. Spying an exit, she turned her car, hoping she could find something quick to eat as she was eager to get to the house before dark. It still bugged her the way Jimmy had insisted on her not to be off the highway after dark. But she trusted him completely; Eva knew Jimmy would never do anything to hurt her. Spying a diner, she parked the car and quickly went inside.
