Elias drove us in one of the alpha kings SUVs with Nyra sitting in the passenger seat, while I sat in the backseat with Carter quietly. I didn't know the right words to say to him to console him and give him some peace of mind. So I just held his hand, occasionally giving it a gentle squeeze. With Nyra giving him direction, Elias managed to take us directly to Carter's place.
"I don't know whether I can do this," Carter whispered when we stepped out of the SUV, his eyes watering as he looked at their house. My father stood outside waiting in a quiet vigil, with a couple of Carter's neighbours and friends, with the porch lights on. He was the only child, and what made it even worse was that his parents were the only children. His grandparents were long gone, so that left him totally without immediate family.
