I’m trying to read, and trying’s pretty much all that I do when Jeremy gets out of the bathroom and stands at the door. He’s already dressed in a shirt with long sleeves and sweatpants.

He glances at me, then at the mattress I’m lying on, placed directly next to the bed he’s going to sleep in.

“That’s not fair.”

“What?”

“This is your bed. I should be the one sleeping on the floor.”

I shrug.

“It doesn’t matter.”

He shakes his head and gets on the bed. Jeremy lies on his side and turns to me.

“Thank you.”

“What for?”

“Everything, just… your sister’s great, and your parents love each other and…”
