Chapter 148. Coping
Carlos could almost taste the fear as it rose up from within him like puke.
He could hear the words before Asher’s mouth even opened. Asher would tell him that they had been right about Fiona all along. Asher would tell him that Fiona had decided her staycation at his home was over, and just as she had walked into his life by her own decision, she had walked out.
Asher would tell him that he had been a fool to think that he was the one in charge, and Asher would tell him that Fiona had laughed at him every time he made a show of being in control. But Asher would not tell him that she had marched to her father to tell him all the things Carlos had offloaded on her, because Asher would not know until it was too late and McCarthy had come to face them, armed.
Asher did not, in fact, say any of those things. “She got away,” was what Asher said instead. “I got the information that your house was to be raided almost too late. Almost is a precious thing.”
