Chapter 29. An Outing Together

The next few days, Gilbert was extremely busy managing everything all on his own. Jaxon was struggling to get Carmella to talk to him, and it didn’t look like he could return to work soon. Gilbert returned home at the end of a tiring day and, after toying around with his food, he gave up and headed straight toward his room. Jacqueline wanted to help Margaret with the dishes, but Gilbert’s mom sent her away. 

“I think he’s upset about something. He needs you more,” said his mom. Jacqueline nodded. 

“I’ll check,” she said, going upstairs to their bedroom. He was lying on the bed with his arms behind his head, deep in thought. She lay down next to him, placing her head on his chest. 

“What has got you so upset, Ashton? You can tell me, you know,” she asked him softly. She hadn’t gone to work with him as she wasn’t feeling very well since morning. 

“I don’t want to upset you as well,” he told her with his eyes closed.
