Chapter 57
Vera’s POV
I thought I was going to die.
The pain that tore through me when I fell down the stairs felt like it reached my bones and veins. I couldn’t tell where I was. I didn’t want to go any farther down this dark tunnel I felt myself sinking into.
As I slowly started to gather myself, the world around me came into blurry focus. The memories flooded back, and my heavy eyelids fluttered open.
The first thing I saw was a chiseled face filled with worry and sadness. Jack. He sat by my bedside, watching me like a guardian angel. If this were before the incident, I might have kissed him.
“Vera, darling! You’re awake! Thank God you made it!” Jack cried out, his voice trembling with emotion.
A sharp pain shot from my left ear up through my skull and spread like wildfire through my veins. A tear escaped the corner of my eye, and I weakly reached for his hand.
