Chapter 64
Vera's POV
I rushed to the door and yanked it open. Nothing had changed about Kenneth’s house. The same cold silence, the same walls that had once seen me suffer. I stood there for a moment, but I didn’t feel free at all. I felt trapped all over again.
The memory of last night slowly returned, bits and pieces. I remembered someone leaning close to me, their face blurred, then... nothing. Darkness. And now I am here. Somehow, I'd ended up in Kenneth's house again.
I guessed they must have found me unconscious this morning and brought me here. Maybe even given me first aid. But that kind of kindness didn't match Kenneth. He was never the type to care about anyone but himself. It didn’t add up.
I knew better than to let the guards catch me roaming around. Their eyes always made me feel exposed, like I was prey. I slipped back into the room and left the door slightly ajar, just enough to keep an eye on who might come in. I needed to stay alert.
