Jackson's POV
I could say I barged into Hannah’s house by accident. I had knocked first, but when I felt the door shift from inside, I just pushed it open and stepped in before she could reach it. Maybe it was rude, but I didn’t care. I was desperate.
Hannah’s eyes widened the moment she saw me, startled. Her surprise didn’t last long, though, only a few seconds before she schooled her expression. I knew she knew something. Vera would’ve told her. That tiny flinch in her eyes confirmed it.
“Jack…” she said quietly, her voice trailing off, unsure.
“I figured she would tell you,” I said, trying to force a smile but feeling it falter. “Where did she go?”
I didn’t wait for an invitation to sit or settle. Instead, I placed a hand on the kitchen counter, leaning over it as I stared into her questioning eyes. She motioned toward the living room with a polite wave, but I ignored it. My focus was singular, Vera.
