As she handed me the stack of papers, she remarked, "So, here's the research papers you wanted; I'm really sorry about the patient you lost."
"It's all right." I studied the papers for a moment. "Who wrote this?"
"Oh, uh, Dr. Adam Hunt," she said.
Brilliant… This guy's a genius.
He went into great depth explaining his work, including strategies for rapidly stabilizing emergency patients and methods for predicting whether an operation will succeed. These papers had more information than I had learned in several of my semester-long classes.
"That's enough," I said.
"Well then, I better get going," she remarked as she stood up. "You can continue where you left off."
A flush of humiliation spread across my face. "I told you not to talk about it."
I'd been sitting on my ass all day, so I got up to follow her, taking my coffee
