Since Maia Shelton's return to Middenhall, things haven’t been the same for her.  Not in the sense that you're thinking, no. In the sense that she's been thinking a lot about her conversation with Mrs Garfield. Throughout the trip back to Crestview, the older woman's response has been stuck in her mind.

Maia's mood hasn't been the same, and she could tell Lea had taken note of it because she overheard her Sunday afternoon asking her mother if she was upset with her. And it hurt Maia because her mood swings made her think she was upset with her.

Maia Shelton didn't think what was going on would affect her this much, considering she never wanted to find out about her parents.

It was Wednesday afternoon and she was at work. For the past few days, she has been forcing herself to check into work. But once at work, she wrapped herself in work so she had very little time to think about her conversation Saturday afternoon with Mrs Garfield.
