Chapter 27

I looked at Claire and we were both startled when Beta Maverick barged into the room. I felt a chill going down my spine because of the sharp accusation in his voice.

“Are you done pretending to be sick, Chloe?” he asked earlier.

He implied that I had been lying about my sickness in an evil scheme to get some alone time with Claire. She glanced in my direction and our eyes met as we tried to think of a way to respond to his unfair accusations. All of a sudden, the room was tense, and I could feel that Claire had become nervous.

“I didn’t feign my illness, Beta,” I told him the truth because what else should I tell him?

“Oh really? So, what about now? Are you feeling better? You can’t die on me, Chloe. Not now, especially when I have a special guest coming!”

“A guest?”

“Yes! Didn’t I tell you that we should announce our engagement soon? It would be at a time when the special guest would come, and he is coming within this week.”

“I see,” I mum
