Aldrich stepped away from the door to let me in and started telling me about a recent attack.

I managed to smooth my hair with my hands and tried to avoid his assessing gaze.

I exhaled deeply and tucked my hair behind my ear. “What were you saying?” I asked, but my voice wasn’t audible enough, so I spoke a bit louder.

“I didn’t hear what you said at first.”
