I checked my wristwatch while waiting for the valet to bring my car and wondered if Manuela was still at the mall with Cecília. I had informed Manuela about my commitment that night, and the fact that I had left my cell phone in the car didn’t worry me. There was nothing so urgent that it couldn’t wait a few hours for a response.

The business dinner with my father and some Spanish entrepreneurs took longer than I had anticipated, but my mind was at ease. The night was pleasant, and the conversation with the entrepreneurs was more fruitful than expected, which was great for business, especially for strengthening our branch in Barcelona.

Already in my car, as I drove through the city streets, something made me think of Manuela. I was near the mall where she said she would be. I decided to check if she was still there. With an automatic gesture, I reached for the phone on the car dashboard and unlocked the screen.

While waiting at the traffic light, I was
