Chapter 57
Maya swallowed hard, staring out the window as the scenery passed by. The man drove a short distance before turning off the road and heading deeper into the woods once again. He parked the car next to a small cabin, getting out and opening the trunk. He pulled out an old suitcase and threw it in the backseat, then grabbed the duffel bag and placed it beside it. He reached into the front of the car and retrieved a backpack, slinging it over his shoulder.
"Ready?" he asked, pulling her attention back to him.
"I guess," she replied.
"Great. Follow me."
He led her through the woods, stopping every few minutes to check the area. She recognized the signs of a hunting camp – a rifle leaning against a tree, a pile of empty cans sitting by the fire pit, a couple of deer carcasses hung from the rafters. The man appeared to be checking that no one had been here recently, although why he wanted to make sure that was beyond her.
