Chapter 90. I Know, Dear

The evening had been quite lovely. My dad wasn’t home—he wasn’t in Houston for some work-related reason.

After dinner, I went back into my room, staring out the window, lost in thought. I had missed a call from Scott and found the text he had left me. I texted back. That was like an hour ago and still, no reply. I knew I should not have been worried, but I just couldn’t help it.

A soft knock on the door caught my attention.

“Who is it?”

“It’s me, sweetie.”

Aunt Susie? I hurried to the door and opened it.

“I’m glad you’re awake. I—can I come in?”

“Yes, of course.”

Walking slowly to the bed, she sat down and tapped the side, signaling for me to do the same. We used to have nights like this… We basically just talked until dawn. She asked questions, I asked questions—it was basically bonding time. It had been quite a while since the last one, though.

“I noticed how restless you’ve been all day. In the car, you bar
