Chapter 19. Cargne
CYRUS
The Main Event. Iridan Colossus.
The roar of the crowd is electric. Like shock waves vibrating an expanse, it devours the atmosphere, drowning my spirit and leaving my mouth ajar. The sand beneath my feet grows hotter by the second as the clouds pave the way for the sun to descend with its torment. I try to breathe, but particles of dust line my nostrils, forcing a heavy sneeze out of me.
I take in the glorious sight, picking out two other figures lingering at the extremes of the sandy breadth, clad in thick, shiny armor like soldiers going to war. I look at myself—a mediocrity in a scene of glory. I didn’t even bring a knife with me, let alone a spear or shield. Although Assar made sure to hand them to me, I probably forgot them somewhere while climbing the never-ending staircase to this arena, as their weight was most uncomfortable.
