Chapter 49. Shadows of Death

My eyes peel open, a drowsy feeling weighing down on me. I can hear the sound of banging on the door. I pass my gaze around the empty chamber, from the fancy lamps to the purple curtains dancing on the window as a cold breeze drifts in. I can see the blue sky, a testament that it is the early hours of the morning, a time that is supposed to be characterized by peace and tranquility.
“Your Grace!” A hoarse voice resonates from behind the door as the banging intensifies. I spring to my feet, searching around for my brown clothing since I’m naked. On seeing it lying on the ground, I pick it up and slide it on before reaching for the door. On opening it, I see Edna panting like a deer that has just raced up a hill, the horror plastered on her face is almost palpable.
“What happened?” I wonder aloud, my pulse breaking into a sprint as I pray it is not as terrible as I perceive.
“The Annunaki,” she utters in between breaths, “They are here!”
