Chapter 49. I’ll Do Whatever It Takes
Xerina’s POV
Papa’s face darkened, and for a moment, he seemed lost in thought. His eyes glowered dangerously, making him look almost menacing. I flinched, feeling a shiver run down my spine. But as he realized I wasn’t going to back down, he let out a sigh, his grey-blue eyes softening.
“It’s an ancient mark, sweetheart. Why do you ask?”
I hesitated, shifting my weight from one foot to the other and wringing my hands. “I’ve… encountered some things.” I bit my lip, glancing down before meeting his gaze again. “I need to understand.”
Papa studied me for a moment, his expressions solemn, and I hated how I couldn’t read him. He stepped closer, gently placing a hand on my head.
“This isn’t something to take lightly,” he said, his voice low and serious. “The Mark of Slavery is tied to dark magic, ancient and powerful. Those who bear it are bound in ways that are difficult to break.”
