Davis was not proud of the decision that he had come to. He was basically selling his son at this point to protect his image, but he couldn’t make any other decision. If he decided to withdraw from this, it would mean that his entire company would be sued, and his family would suffer from poverty as he would doubtlessly go bankrupt. His son would have to drop out of school, and they would be suffering like beggars.

But he was far too ashamed to say this out loud to his son, so instead, he held an impenetrable wall between the two of them.
