“J-Jared.” Mia’s tone was low, her eyes revealing emotions I was certain she was feeling inside. I eye-rolled inwardly. Could she not just pick a brother and stick with him? Or, in light of recent events, just stick with Jerome since she ruined her marriage because of him.

“Hello, Martha.” Jared greeted his mother-in-law with politeness.

She approached him and gave him a hug. “I’m sorry.” Her lips trembled.

But Jared smiled back. “You have nothing to be sorry for. Moreover, it’s all in the past now. I have Hailey.”

Martha’s gaze slid over to where I stood watching as a spectator.

“Hello, Hailey.” Her eyes were sad as they roved over me.

“Hello, Mrs. Pillax,” I greeted coolly.

“Hailey,” Martha greeted again; she too was staring at me.
