Chapter 3
Dominick’s Pov:
After Jason had left, I dressed up slowly, thinking about what I had planned to do. But Gaza had assured it was going to work out well. And if it does, I would have amassed a whole lot for my pack.
As the alpha of my pack, I must think of the welfare of my people. And I wished nothing but prosperity and dominance. Am I wrong to want my pack to grow on grounds and have authority over other packs?
But this decision I am about to take is a risky one, because it may endanger the lives of the members of my pack. But life is all about risks and I could be very discreet and achieve it without involving anyone or risking the lives of my people if I could cover up well.
I made up my mind and left, going out of the territory of our pack. I took the routes that are not always in use because my pack members were out this morning and I did not want to come across any of them.
I had shifted to enable me to run my journey because it would take longer walking on foot. I finally got there and walked into their hideout.
Suddenly, two werewolves emerged from my sides, growling at my intrusion. A figure walked from the dark sides of the thick forest and approached us.
“It’s the great alpha,” Gaza said, laughing. “Let him in, come on.”
The werewolves relaxed and led me into their tents, one in front of me and the other behind me.
“So have you finally come up with a decision?” Gaza asked after we were seated.
“Gaza, I do not want to do anything that will endanger the lives of my pack,” I told him.
“I have told you. They will not find out you have anything to do with it,” he said.
“And if they do? What if something goes wrong?” I wanted to be certain. He touched his beards, thoughtfully.
“I have not come this far for nothing,” he said finally. “I build up my pack from scratch. I am no alpha, but I am a very strong werewolf. I and the other werewolves you see here, survive on the livings of other packs. We do not beg for it, we take it if we want it. What am I trying to say? When I tell you it is going to work, it will.
You are the alpha of the pack, a legal leader. Unless someone leaks it out, this is supposed to be likened to the activities of a rogue. No one would suspect you. Except, like I said, someone leaks it out. And I give you my word, no one here would. So what is your fear?”
“Fine then.” Every word he had said sounded convincing and I agreed to it. I rose to leave.
“Here,” he handed me some cowries.
“What are these for?” I asked, looking at them.
“As a sign of our agreement. Take it,” he pushed it into my palms. “You will begin to hear of our works soon. Bye for now Dominick.”
Brenda’s Pov:
I went home thinking about everything that happened today. That was a whole lot in a day. Okay, maybe not a lot happened. But I had always led a very quiet uneventful life, and I think today was a whole lot of day.
One significant reason why is that for the first time, I saw our beta. Not only did I see him, but he spoke to me. I could not get over it. He spoke to me…
For the very first time in my life, I looked forward to the next pack’s task because hopefully, I would see Jason again.
Unfortunately for me, I did not get to see Jason the next time I went to the pack’s gathering spot. I was so disappointed when the task for the day was over, and there was no sign of him anywhere. The other werewolves had begun to disperse. I turned round sadly and was about to leave when the two girls that had stood close to me last time approached me.
“There you are,” they greeted gingerly.
“Hey,” I replied slowly.
“What is wrong? You don’t look so happy,” the nudger said.
“Yeah, I don’t feel so well,” I said. “I just want to go home and rest.” I hoped they would not bother me anymore because I just wanted to be alone.
“Oh, come on,” her lousy friend raised her hands up and down. “You did not even do anything much like the rest of us, and you are tired already.”
“That is not nice,” her friend chided, nudging her.
“Don’t nudge,” she yelled.
“You are so loud! Now look everyone is looking at us.”
I decided to leave.
“Oh my goodness, Brenda look!” the nudger held me back, and I wondered what she wanted with me again.
“What!?” I half yelled in my head, but it came out like a low whisper.
“The alpha! That’s the alpha!” she exclaimed, and I turned round abruptly to see him.
And goodness me, I beheld the most perfect creature I had ever set my eyes on! Words fail me to describe him.
That is our alpha…? Wow…
But I did not get to see him much to my satisfaction because he left almost as immediately as he came. Some werewolves came to our sides and distracted the two ladies with me. They laughed away, and it seemed I was invisible to them.
Well, that was not unusual. I sighed and walked away. At least, I have achieved something, which was seeing the alpha.
I did not want to go home yet, so I took a stroll, hoping to come across Jason suddenly just like the last time, but that did not happen.
I had not realized how far I had walked till I heard a growl and looked up to see a werewolf approaching me menacingly.
I looked around in fear, and there was no sign of anybody around. I had walked quite a distance from where my pack members were without even being conscious of it. And now, I am at the mercy of this werewolf.
It would not take more than a minute to tear me apart. It suddenly lurched at me with speed. I screamed and used my hands to shield my face. Suddenly, another werewolf emerged from nowhere, thwarting the attack.
