Chapter 74

The loud siren has me awake, jumping out of bed, and Jackson grabbing me.

“Get the girls and go into the safe room.” I grab the girls, running to the safe room, passing Marcus along the way, and shutting the door. I am relieved that the noise doesn’t go off in here. It’s the fire alarms, yet, looking at the monitors, there is no smoke anywhere in the house. I am grateful Jackson had thought to put two cribs in here. The girls go back to sleep quickly. I sit watching Jackson and Marcus check around the house, but there is no fire or smoke. I turn the switch on so I can hear the sound. The fire alarms are still going off. Turning it as low as possible, I leave the sound on, so I will know when it stops.

I watch Jackson turn it off after checking there is no fire. Turning up the volume, I listen to them talking while re-checking.
