After the night’s incident, the biting of the strange dog, she didn’t regain consciousness for two days, though at the time, she thought only hours had passed.
Opening her eyes required a major effort. The lids felt hot and swollen. Her throat ached, her ears ached, and her head ached; in fact, her whole body ached. Hell, even her teeth hurt.
She blinked a few times. The room dipped and swayed, then came into focus. Alex was sitting on a chair beside the bed she was lying on. He couldn’t take his eyes off the young girl. She lifted her head. Pain exploded behind her eyes. Her head fell back to the pillow, and she groaned. Alex stood, looking down at her. That was the first time one would understand that she was alive.
“My head...” she mumbled as if she was speaking through a mouthful of marshmallows. She swallowed, wincing at the pain. “My hand...” She cried again. Then she rolled from side to side, trying to get up. Alex grabbed her shoulders and held her down. Sh
