Maddy’s POV
It was an instinctive reaction, something that I hoped would tell me she was just feverish or her pregnancy was making her think wrong, something that would explain why she was making such a ridiculous decision.
But no. Her skin was warm, not too hot, not too cold.
She pulled away from me, a little irritated, but I couldn’t help myself. “What are you doing?” she asked.
“I’m checking if you’re okay,” I replied, though I could tell by the look on her face that she didn’t think she was in any danger.
“I’m fine, Maddy,” she said, her voice soft but firm. “I’m not sick.”
“No, Layla, you’re not fine,” I snapped. “You’re telling me you’re going back to your kidnapper. That’s not fine, and I am not going to sit here and pretend that it is.”
Her expression hardened, and I saw a flicker of something in her eyes. Maybe it was defiance, maybe it was guilt. Either way, I wasn’t about to back down.
