Maddy was still looking around in disbelief. “This place is like a fortress. I can’t believe you’ve been living here.” She shook her head. “How do we even get inside? I mean, there’s no bell, no way to alert anyone inside that we’re here.”
I felt the weight of her words sink in. She was right. There was no bell, no intercom, no way to reach anyone unless you had a direct line to them. I hadn’t thought this far ahead. What was I supposed to do now?
“I guess we’ll have to knock,” I said quietly, trying to sound confident, even though I had no idea what to expect. “I don’t know any other way.”
Maddy gave me a doubtful look. “But Layla, you don’t have a phone. And you don’t even know if Jaden will answer. Do you have his number? What if he’s not home?”
