Maddy’s POV
She was determined, focused. I admire that about her, even if I didn’t fully agree with her decision.
“How do we get inside?” I asked, glancing around the perimeter. There was no bell, no intercom, no way to alert anyone that we were here. It felt like we were standing outside a fortress, trying to figure out how to break in.
Layla looked at the gate and then shrugged. “I guess we knock. I don’t know any other way.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Knock? Are you serious?”
She gave me a look, and I could see that she was trying to stay calm, trying to act like she knew what she was doing. But I knew her too well.
Layla was just as nervous as I was, and I wasn’t sure what was worse, the fear of what would happen once we got inside, or the fact that I was helping her return to a place where she had been trapped for so long.
