Maddy’s POV
How was I supposed to respond to that? How could I stand by and watch her go back to a life that had almost broken her?
But I could see it in her eyes…the desperation, the vulnerability, the trust she had in Jaden now. I could tell she wasn’t doing this lightly.
“Okay,” I said, my voice soft but firm. “I’ll go with you. But only because you need me. You don’t have to do this alone.”
She gave me a small, relieved smile, but I could see the pain in her eyes. She didn’t want to go back to Jaden. She didn’t want to be in this situation at all. But she felt like she had no choice. And that was what tore me apart.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” I whispered, more to myself than to her. “I don’t know if I can watch you go back to him, Layla. But I’ll be there. For you.”
She nodded, her fingers trembling as she reached out and squeezed my hand. “Thank you, Maddy. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
