Jason’s POV

I chose him because he looked like Logan. It was that simple. The resemblance was uncanny…the same dark hair, the same sharp features. I knew Logan wouldn’t question it. Not for a second.

When I told Mr. Paul about my choice, he looked at me with those kind, weary eyes of his. 

“Gerald’s mother… She's in a rehab center. Poor woman lost her mind after his father died. The government left him in my care, but… she’s getting better. She’ll be out soon.”

I should’ve stopped right there. I should’ve walked away. But I didn’t.

Instead, I asked the one question that sealed everything. “Does she ever visit?”

Mr. Paul shook his head. “No. She hasn’t been stable enough. But she asks about him… every time I visit her. She loves that boy more than anything in this world.”

I looked at Gerald, his small frame curled up by the window, completely oblivious to the fact that his whole life was about to change.
