Absolutely nothing. I felt my chest tighten, my throat closing up as the realization hit me. How could I have been so stupid?

I lowered my head, my shoulders slumping as I whispered, “You’re right… I don’t know him at all.”

Maddie’s expression softened, her arms unfolding as she reached out to take my hand. 

“Hey… I’m not trying to hurt you. I just… I don’t want to see you get played. I don’t want to see you hurt like this. Not over some guy who won’t even show up for dinner.”
