Maddie's POV

I tilted my head, keeping my expression light and curious even though my heart was pounding so loudly I could barely hear my own thoughts. 

“Why? Is it some big secret or something?”

“No!” she said quickly, shaking her head as she wiped the coffee with a paper towel. 

“It’s just… I didn’t think you’d… ugh, I look so silly in that picture.”

I walked closer, holding out her phone with the picture still on display. 

“I don’t think you look silly at all. You look… happy.” I watched her face closely, my heart sinking as her blush deepened, her eyes softening as she stared at the screen.

She looked… in love.

Layla took the phone from me, her fingers brushing mine as she held it close to her chest, a small, dreamy smile on her lips. 

“Yeah… I guess I do.”

I swallowed hard, my mind racing as I tried to keep my voice steady.
