Maddie's POV
As the laughter died down, I turned my attention back to Layla, and for the first time, I actually took a good look at her.
There was something off about her today. Her skin had this unusual glow, but at the same time, she looked dull…tired, even.
Her eyes, which were usually filled with mischief and warmth, seemed slightly dimmer, and there was a faint paleness to her cheeks.
A frown tugged at my lips as I tilted my head, studying her closely. Was she alright? Layla was strong, but even strong people had their limits.
Layla must have noticed my lingering stare because she suddenly turned to me, raising a brow.
“Okay, Maddie, what’s with the intense staring? Do I have something on my face?” she asked, attempting to laugh it off.
I folded my arms. “No, but now that you mention it, you don’t look too good.”
Layla scoffed. “Gee, thanks for the compliment.”
