Chapter 10

Maxine's POV

As I sang, I saw Tobias’s expression soften, his stern appearance giving away.

When I finished, he gave me a small nod. “You’ve got a gift, girl. Keep singing. It might just make this place a little less miserable.”

“Thank you, Tobias,” I said, feeling a warm glow of pride.

As the days passed, my singing became a regular part of the routine. More guards began to listen, some even joining in with their songs. The environment started to change, the sadness lifting ever so slightly.

One afternoon, as I was finishing my chores, Elena arrived with a mischievous smile. “I have a surprise for you,” she announced.

“What is it?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.

“Come with me,” she said, leading me to a small garden outside the main building. In the center was a table set with flowers, a simple but beautiful display.

I became scared, I was not supposed to be here or leave my cell. Liam would kill me if he found out.
