Maxine's POV

I looked at him, my eyes hollow. “How can you say that, Kris? After everything I've been through, how can you expect me to believe that?”

He took a deep breath, his eyes were filled with pity. “Because I've seen you fight. I've seen you endure things that would break anyone else. You're stronger than you think, Maxine. You have the power to overcome this and your heart is gold.”

His words struck a chord within me, but the pain was still too overwhelming. I wanted to believe him, but I didn't know how. All I could do was lie there, lost in my misery, praying for an end to my suffering.
