“No, no, no, no! I think it’s time for some explaining now,” she said, tapping her foot with arms crossed tightly across her chest, facing Big John. After what happened earlier, she couldn’t build up the nerve to face Garrison. “I thought I was just here to help the colored men of this town to read so that they could vote.”
“What is she talking bout?” John directed the question to Garrison.
“What is said here goes no further than our ears,” Garrison said sharply, knowing that Victoria was purposely trying to avoid eye contact with him at all costs. If only she knew. That was just the beginning. He couldn’t help but smirk.
She saw the corner of his mouth rise out of the corner of her eye. She immediately turned towards him and pointed her finger at his chest in anger. “I want to know what’s going on, and I want to know now. Why are you bringing Winston and that…that woman here anyway? Besides, she doesn’t know me or even like me.”
