The morning air was heavy with tension. The sun had barely risen, shining its light across the ground as the first light of day struggled to push away the darkness of night. But the darkness wasn’t just around me; it was inside me too, storming in me and boiling, threatening to spill over.
I couldn’t believe she was gone. Rose, the stubborn, fearless woman I had grown to care for more than I ever thought possible, had just slipped away in the night. And I was angry—angry at her for leaving, also more angry at myself for not seeing it coming, and angry at everyone else for not stopping her. But most of all, I was angry because I knew, deep down, that I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
