She smiled at that, a genuine smile that reached her eyes. “It was a team effort, Kanen. We all had a part to play.” she said, reminding me of other’s contributions to stop the war.

I nodded, knowing she was right but still feeling a deep respect for what she had accomplished. “You’ve got a good heart, Elise. I’m glad you’re with us.” I said as I kept on praising her.

“Likewise,” she replied, giving me a warm look.

The rest of the march was quiet, with only the occasional murmur of conversation among the soldiers. The forest around us was still, the morning air cool on our skin. It felt almost nice after everything we had been through, as if the world had suddenly calmed down with us.
