I was looking at a magazine in my hand as I waited for Celine to emerge from the dressing room while I sat still and calmly inside an opulent and exclusive bridal studio.

‘‘I… I’m sorry…’’ she said, wiping away her tears with her hand. I went into our bedroom and found her there, sitting by the window and staring outside. ‘‘I was at a loss for words as to how to respond to your proposal.
