Chapter 29. Where Fear Meets Fury
“You called me?” I asked, my voice firm, hiding the panic clawing at my insides.
“Yup, Sha!” Rena chirped, her eyes sparkling. “Why didn’t you tell me you knew uncle Vincent? He’s my dad’s acquaintance.”
I forced an awkward smile. Uncle Vincent’s gaze locked onto me, but it wasn’t his usual look. Something was different, intense, and I couldn’t read it. I’d never seen him stare like that before.
Was this about Noah? Did he already know the secret I’d been hiding all this time?
“I’m borrowing Sasha for a bit,” Vincent said to my boss, no hint of guilt in his voice.
“Go for it!” Rena replied, not a care in the world. Didn’t she realize I’d be leaving her shorthanded? Then I caught a glimpse of a thick envelope of cash on her desk. That explained her cheerful vibe.
“How long?” Vincent asked. I figured a guy like him wouldn’t care about anyone else’s schedule.
“Forever’s fine by me—just toss in another envelope,” Rena
