She knew that she was just trying to escape the situation she had gotten herself in. But she also knew that she was trying not to die.
The guard’s smirk was slow, amused. “Is that so?”
She nodded, willing herself to appear more confident than she felt. “Look, I was stupid, okay? I got curious. I overstepped. But if you let me walk out of here right now, this never happened. Victor doesn’t have to know.”
He studied her for a long moment, then let out a quiet chuckle. “You really think I’d risk lying to him for you?”
Anna swallowed. “I think everyone has something they want. Something they need.”
His smirk faded slightly, and she knew she had his attention. She just had to figure out what leverage she had, if she had any.
A tense silence stretched between them, the hum of the computer behind her a cruel reminder
