Chapter 6
A knock on the door woke me, and for a moment I had no idea where I was. The ceiling was too high, the mattress too narrow, and the whole room smelled faintly of someone else's soap instead of mine. Then it all came back. The castle. Our first morning here.
Will was still asleep across the room, one leg sticking out from under the blanket like he'd fought the covers all night and lost. I sat up and looked at the other side of the room, where it was obvious someone else lived. There was a folded nightdress over the back of a chair, a hairbrush next to a small mirror, and a pair of worn shoes tucked neatly under the second bed.
I'd expected my roommate to arrive sometime during the night. She hadn't. And Will had been so exhausted by the time we finally reached our room that he'd climbed straight into her bed before I could stop him.
