Shantelle’s POV
“The truth is, our family’s been hiding secrets for years,” Uncle Salvador said, his voice low and measured, as if he were carefully choosing each word to avoid triggering an explosion of emotions.
Papa’s eyes flashed with a warning, a silent plea for restraint that seemed to hang in the air like a thick fog.
“Salvador, please,” he said, his tone urgent but barely above a whisper, as if the walls themselves had ears.
Uncle Salvador’s gaze locked onto Papa’s, unwavering and intense. It was a battle of wills, and it felt as though the air crackled with tension, each second stretching longer than the last.
“They deserve to know,” he said, his voice steady, as if he had made this decision long before this moment.
Mama’s hand tightened around Papa’s arm, her fingers digging into his skin as if she could physically anchor him to the present, to the safety of our home.
