Chapter 11
I woke up in the hospital. I had already experienced this. I was covered with cables, machines with annoying background sounds... But this time, there was something different. When I managed to focus my gaze, I saw Mireya sitting down. She was serious, looking at me with a disappointment that gave me chills. She looked nothing like the Mireya I once knew. I did not know this woman.
“Where’s my money?” she said. She didn’t care about my health.
As best as I could, I explained what happened. What I remembered, at least. Her face was immutable. I began to fear for my life. The image of the torchman came to my mind all too sharply.
“You’re a coward, Oscarcito,” she answered me. “We’ll talk at home. Let’s get out of here. I don’t want to be in this hospital.” She stood up to call a nurse or the doctor. I didn’t know. I didn’t care. “Someone else will take care of today; you can’t.”
When I got home, I felt finished. I felt pain in parts of my body where I shouldn’t
