Chapter 8
I drove to the neighborhood, and when I got to her house, I stopped the car and got out to open the door for her. My boss stared at me seriously, and I didn’t know what to say.
“What are you doing?” I stuttered, afraid she would get mad. “I can get out of a car by myself.”
I didn’t say anything. I just stepped back and let her get out, which she did gracefully. I didn’t score a point with her. This woman was far more complicated than any woman I had ever met. I didn’t understand her, and I didn’t think I would ever fully understand her, but it was clear that sometimes she was my boss, serious and bossy, relentless. But other times, she was the girl I had met a few days ago, kind and attentive, always smiling. I had to learn to differentiate between the two sides of her, as the success of my job depended on it, and my plans hinged on its success.
One day less to be with my baby.
